Wednesday night on "The Colbert Report," host Stephen Colbert dissected First Lady Michelle Obama's widely praised 2012 Democratic National Convention speech. Rock-ribbed conservative pundit Colbert was not drinking the Obama-ade, however.
"Oh, I wonder how she got that gig," he mused. "Crony capitalism! Solyndra!"
The First Lady, he said, spoke about her husband's character, their children and their life together, but, said Colbert, "I'm not going to get into a lot of details about her speech...because it was very good."
Colbert then cut to clips of pundits both left and right praising Michelle Obama's speech, saying that she hit all the notes correctly, calling it "brilliant," and saying "she knocked the house down."
The notably erudite and always-correct Charles Krauthammer (sarcasm alert) said that while Obama's delivery was pitch perfect, "I didn't buy a line of it."
Colbert cut to footage of the First Lady saying, with a quaver in her voice, that her two daughters are the center of her life, the "heart of (her) heart." The camera swung back to Colbert who pretended to sob, hand on heart, before saying, "It just doesn't ring true!" Pointing to his chest, he said, "In here, I can tell that's all bullshit...warm, soul-stirring bullshit."
