White House reveals ‘Ale to the Chief’ beer recipes

Published

Barack Obama promised and Saturday the White House delivered, revealing recipes for the president’s official microbrewed honey beers, following an Internet campaign.

“With public excitement about the White House beer fermenting such a buzz, we decided we better hop right to it,” said Sam Kass, one of Obama’s chefs, on the White House blog.

The “Ale to the Chief,” he punned, is “as far as we know … the first alcohol brewed or distilled on the White House grounds.”

“George Washington brewed beer and distilled whiskey at Mount Vernon and Thomas Jefferson made wine, but there’s no evidence that any beer has been brewed in the White House,” he continued.

“Inspired by home brewers from across the country, last year President Obama bought a home brewing kit for the kitchen” at the White House, the chef explained.

With advice from White House staffers who brew in their own spare time, the chefs honed a recipe – tweaked from a local brew shop’s offering – which features honey “tapped from the first ever bee-hive on the South Lawn” in the White House garden.

On the blog, the complete recipe was given with precise directions. A video shows the different steps of the brewing process in the White House kitchens.

Obama, who participated Wednesday in a question and answer session over social media network Reddit, had promised that the recipe would be “out soon!” adding that “I can tell from first hand experience, it is tasty.”

More than 12,000 people had signed a petition asking for the White House’s special brew on the “We the People” page of the White House web site, which is dedicated to grassroots petitions.

The recipe can be found at: www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2012/09/01/ale-chief-white-house-beer-recipe.

Trump lashes out at ‘grossly incompetent’ Nancy Pelosi but claims GOP ‘killing it’ in impeachment hearings

President Donald Trump attacked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) from the White House on Tuesday.

As impeachment testimony was underway in the House, Trump told reporters in a Cabinet meeting that Pelosi is "grossly incompetent."

The president also said that Republicans are "killing it" in the impeachment hearings.

But Trump took a shot at Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, who was testifying at the time.

"I don't know him. ... I never saw the man," he said. "I understand now he wears his uniform when he goes in. No, I don't know Vindman at all. What I do know is that even he said that the transcript was correct."

Donald Trump Jr. questioned the military service of Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, and was sprayed with venom.

The president's eldest son posted a link to a Federalist article suggesting Vindman is not a dedicated military officer and public servant, a line of questioning which Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) also pursued during an impeachment hearing.

"Let’s Stop Pretending Every Impeachment Witness Is A Selfless Hero," Trump Jr. tweeted, quoting the piece's headline.

‘I’m an American’: Lt Col Vindman laughs off GOP counsel’s attempts to question his loyalty

Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman laughed off questions about an offer by a Ukrainian official to serve as that country's defense minister.

The Soviet-born Vindman, who emigrated to the U.S. as a child and later served in the Iraq War, agreed that a Ukrainian official had offered him the government position three times during an official visit for the inauguration of the country's new president, Volodymyr Zelensky.

"I don't know (why the position was offered), but every single time I dismissed it," Vindman said. "Upon returning I notified my chain of command and the appropriate counter-intelligence folks about the offer."
