An unusual counterfeiting ring in Dover, N.J., produced thousands of bottles of ketchup with fake Heinz labels.

But a storage unit containing 50,000 pounds of the condiment released a rank odor after the heat and fermentation caused many of the bottles to explode, exposing the scam.

Heinz paid to clean the mess and is investigating the matter, although the company doesn't believe any of the counterfeit bottles actually hit grocery shelves.
