During an appearance on Current TV’s Viewpoint, comedian Bill Maher said Tuesday that Republicans could probably shift their policies on immigration and taxes, but would still have racists within their ranks.
“The racial stuff, that is going to be harder for them,” he said. “I saw right after the election, a number of them, Rush Limbaugh, lamenting the passing of the white demographic. He basically was saying, ‘What do you expect me to be. I’m a racist and a misogynist. You don’t expect me to give that up. What happened to the days, people, when you could speak crap about blacks and Latinos and gays, and they didn’t hold it against you at the polls? I mean, gee, what are we coming to?'”
“Those are the people who I think when we get to the next round of primaries, those are the people who go to the debates, those are the people who boo a gay soldier,” Maher continued. “Those are the people who are always going to be dragging them back to their troglodyte base.”
The host of HBO’s Real Time said it was now time to for progressives to “turn their fire” on Obama.
“The conservatives lost, and now, now is the time for progressives,” Maher explained. “We can obsess about every stupid thing that conservatives do, and they will keep doing stupid things, but really what we need to do, I think, is turn our attention to the president and hold his feet to the fire on those issues like getting out of Afghanistan, civil liberties, stopping the drug war, climate change.”
“These are issues where he was not able to do I’m sure as much as he wanted to do in the first term, but look, he has no more elections to run. If not now, when? This is the time.”
