MIAMI — A 13-year-old schoolgirl in Florida was shot dead Tuesday by another student as she was being transported on a school bus with her younger sister and eight other children, police said.
"The girl was taken to Children's Hospital in Miami where she died," said Alvaro Zabaleta, spokesman for the Miami-Dade Police Department.
The suspect's name and age was withheld, but authorities indicated he was in police custody and that the weapon used in the incident was taken from him.
The incident occurred before 7:00 am Tuesday when the school bus was picking up children to take them to different schools in the Homestead, Florida area. Preliminary police reports said the girl was shot in the neck.
