At least a dozen people were hurt in New York City on Wednesday when a commuter ferry crashed while docking in lower Manhattan.

There are conflicting reports as to how many people were injured in the accident. CBS News reported that between 30 and 50 people were hurt in the crash, while The New York Times cited fire department officials in saying 17 people were injured.

The ferry, which provides daily service from New Jersey to lower Manhattan, was reportedly carrying 300 people onboard when it crashed into the mooring, opening a large gash on the boat, shattering glass and throwing passengers out of their seat.

"Almost no one knew what was going on," one passenger said, describing the impact as being similar to that of a car crash.

Update, 10:38 a.m. EST: The Times has updated its' injury total to 57.
