A lesbian couple in New Bern, North Carolina said that the owner of the Stingray Cafe passed them an anti-gay letter as they left the eatery recently, which he says was "out of love."

Restaurant owner Ed McGovern gave the letter to Ariel and Shawnee McPhail on December 4, according to ABC affiliate WCTI-TV 12 in North Carolina. It asked that the couple "look at your life" and "see how it hurts everyone around you."

"P.S. my daughter also was gay," he reportedly wrote. "It destroyed her life and my grandson."

The restaurant owner reportedly refused to explain himself to the media.

Same sex marriage is banned in North Carolina, where the prohibition was cemented into the state's constitution after 61 percent of the voters backed an amendment in May.
