A Las Vegas man known as the unofficial spokesperson for the "Heart Attack Grill" restaurant died from exactly that on Monday.
The Las Vegas Sun reported that 52-year-old John Alleman was taken off life support Monday morning. Alleman, a Pennsylvania native and security guard by trade, suffered a heart attack last week while waiting at the bus stop outside the restaurant.
"He lived a very full life," said the restaurant's owner, Jon Basso. "He will be missed."
The restaurant, which features "Flatliner Fries" and the 9,982-calorie "Quadruple Bypass Burger" on its menu, posted a short video tribute to Alleman on its Facebook page, with a message saying, "We love you! Make Heaven laugh as much as we did!"
Alleman went from being a regular at the restaurant to having his likeness featured on menus and merchandise. But Basso said he refused to accept special treatment.
"He never wanted a handout from anyone," he told the newspaper. "He always insisted on paying. He lived, ate and breathed the Heart Attack Grill."
Another restaurant regular, 29-year-old Blair River, who weighed weighed 575 pounds, died in March 2011 from flu-related pneumonia.
Last year, two people reported suffering heart issues while eating the restaurant's "Bypass Burgers."
Alleman is survived by his brother Paul. No date has been set for Alleman's funeral, but the restaurant has promised to match any donations made to cover hospital and memorial costs.
"For a great person like John to just fade away into the night without funeral attendance would truly be an injustice to his wonderful life," the restaurant posted on Facebook. "For that reason the Heart Attack Grill shall close in observance of John's funeral once the exact date is determined."
