Tuesday night on Conan O'Brien's TBS show "Conan," the host welcomed Bill Maher, host of "Real Time with Bill Maher," for a discussion that included notes on the Pope's resignation as well as Maher's profession of his undying love of pot.

Maher and O'Brien began by discussing the resignation of Pope Benedict, the first time a sitting Pope has resigned in 600 years. Usually, Maher said, "You've got to die with the hat on."

O'Brien confessed that he is a lapsed Catholic, or as Maher called him, a "cafeteria Catholic" in that he takes some parts of the doctrine and leaves others, like most Catholics in the U.S. today. Maher pointed out that something like 98 percent of Catholics today have used birth control.

"Apparently the only ones who don't are the priests," he said. "But they would if altar boys could get pregnant."

Conan made a mental note to himself, "Must call mother, must tell her not to watch tonight's show."

The topic then turned to the State of the Union address, which had yet to happen when the segment was taped. Referring back to the inaugural address, Maher said that while the media portrayed that speech as a great liberal address, it was actually fairly centrist.

The president did give a historic nod to LGBT Americans in his inaugural speech, however, and Maher said, "Well, Mr. President, I'm gay for marijuana. I want to be treated equally under the law. We met in high school and we've been together ever since."

"You guys have been going at it hot and heavy," O'Brien said.

"I know, sometimes we forget each other's sentences," said Maher.
