Far-right 'boogaloo' activist gets 50 years in jail after he live-streamed his threats to murder cops
On Friday, the Texarkana Gazette reported that Aaron Swenson, a far-right "Boogaloo" activist, has been sentenced to 50 years in prison after live-streaming his attempt to find police officers to assassinate.
"The jury took less than an hour to convict Swenson of attempted capital murder of a peace officer," reported Lynn LaRowe. "Swenson pleaded guilty Wednesday to charges of felony evading arrest and terroristic threatening. The jury found Thursday that Swenson violated the Texas Hate Crimes Act when he targeted law enforcement. That means he faces an enhanced punishment range on the terroristic threatening charge."
He was convicted on Thursday.
The Texarkana Gazette went on to note that Swenson "dressed himself in the typical garb of Boogaloo members including a Hawaiian shirt and a green tactical vest and armed himself with three firearms, a katana sword and more than 150 rounds of ammunition the night of April 11, 2020."
The report further states that Swenson wore all this gear during a Facebook Live video of himself "driving west on Interstate 30 from his home in Hooks, Texas, as he narrated his hunt for a police officer to execute."
The "Boogaloo Bois" are right-wing extremists who are hoping to start a new civil war in the United States. Last year, they gained prominence after reporting that showed they tried to embed themselves in the George Floyd protests as a way to go after police officers.
WATCH: John Legend drops fact-bombs on Kyrsten Sinema — after she defended the filibuster at his house
Entertainer and activist John Legend listed multiple reasons to eliminate the filibuster during an interview by MSNBC's Mehdi Hasan, which is scheduled to air during his Sunday evening show.
"John, I have to ask, if you could have a conversation one-on-one with either Joe Manchin or Kyrsten Sinema, what would you say to them?" Hasan asked.
"It's funny, because I actually spoke to Kyrsten Sinema," Legend replied.
"I did a fundraiser at our house in Los Angeles for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee — this was years ago, two or three years ago — and she at the time was vociferously standing up for the filibuster," he explained.
In addition to being an EGOT winner for his Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards, Legend has also been a longtime political activist.
"And I just can't state more clearly how wrong I think she is on this issue," he explained. "The filibuster is not in the Constitution, that's a fact."
"And the history and tradition of the rule has been to exclude black people from our democracy, that has been the principle use of the filibuster over the years," he noted.
"It's time to get rid of it," Legend argued. "It's allowing 40 senators, at any time, to derail the the will of the majority."
Former President Donald Trump's most prized piece of Manhattan real estate has been put on a debt "watch list" after seeing its occupancy plunge this year.
Bloomberg News reports that Wells Fargo, which is the master servicer of a $100 million loan on the property, put out documents on Friday showing that Trump Tower's occupancy has dipped below 80 percent this year, down from the 86 percent occupancy recorded at the end of 2020.
The biggest blow to Trump Tower's vacancy came earlier this year when Marc Fisher Footwear, the former designer and manufacturer of Ivanka Trump's shoe line, vacated its massive showroom that occupied the entire 21st floor of the building.
The Trump Organization would subsequently sue Marc Fisher for more than $1 million in what it claimed was unpaid rent, although that case has apparently been dropped, Bloomberg writes.
Bloomberg notes that the former president could be facing a series of financial headaches over the next few years thanks not only to the $100 million Trump Tower loan coming due, but other loans as well.
"The loan, which matures next year, is just one piece of the more than $590 million of debt held by the Trump Organization that comes due within the next four years," the publication writes. "More than half of that is personally guaranteed by Trump."
