Shoemaker Reebok is being urged to drop American rapper Rick Ross over controversial lyrics about drugging a woman’s drink without her knowledge or consent.
The group Ultraviolet launched the campaign to force Reebook to drop the rapper from his sponsorship deal, saying the rapper was “clearly and proudly saying that he drugged and raped a woman” in the new song “U.O.E.N.O. (You Ain’t Even Know It).” The group announced on Tuesday that more than 150 survivors of sexual assault had joined the campaign.
In the song in question, Ross raps: “I die over these Reeboks, you don’t even know it / Put molly all in the champagne, she ain’t even know it / I took her home and I enjoy that, she ain’t even know it.”
Molly refers to MDA, a drug similar to ecstasy that reduces social inhibitions and purportedly enhances the experience of sex by enhancing sensory perceptions.
Ross has said he was sorry that people “interpreted” the lyrics as condoning rape, but his apology was rejected by UltraViolet.
“This issue is simple: Reebok is promoting rape and they need to stop. Rick Ross’ non-apology and inability to understand that drugging and ‘enjoying’ an unconscious woman is in fact rape is appalling,” said Nita Chaudhary, co-founder of UltraViolet. “We are in the middle of a culture change — Steubenville opened many people’s eyes to the real danger of rape culture and 75,732 Reebok customers have had enough: we demand Reebok stop promoting rape and drop Rick Ross.”
