El Salvador’s Supreme Court denies life-saving abortion to woman
El Salvador’s Supreme Court ruled Wednesday against allowing a 22-year-old woman to terminate her pregnancy to save her life, according to the Associated Press.
In a 4-1 vote, the judges upheld the country’s strict abortion laws even though the woman’s fetus is missing most of its brain due to a developmental disorder. El Salvador is one of the few countries that prohibit abortion even when the procedure could save the life of the mother.
The woman, who goes by the name Beatriz, is suffering from lupus and kidney failure. Due to her fragile health, doctors believe her pregnancy could kill her. If born, her fetus has virtually no chance of living more than a few days at most.
