Alaska Republicans elect ‘racist dentist’ as vice chairman
The Alaska Republican Party has elected a controversial figure as their new vice chairman.
The political blog The Mudflats on Sunday reported that Dr. David Eichler was known derogatorily as the “racist dentist” because of controversial comments he made in 2006.
As president of the Alaska Dental Society, Eichler claimed Alaska Natives had high rates of dental problems because they lacked personal responsibility. He also said Alaska Natives could not be integrated “into American society as dignified citizens” until they refused federal assistance.
Eichler was later nominated to the Alaska Public Offices Commission by Gov. Sean Parnell in 2012. He withdrew his nomination after the controversial comments were republished.
“The Alaska Republican Party should remove David Eichler as a party Vice-Chairman immediately,” Alaska Democratic Party chairman Mike Wenstrup told Mudflats. “Alaska has no place for the racist view expressed by Eichler that Alaska Native cultures will ‘soon disappear and rightfully so.'”
