Sheriff’s officials in Redding, California charged a 27-year-old man with attempted homicide on Tuesday after the suspect allegedly stabbed his father with scissors before severing his own hands.
KOVR-TV reported that Shasta County Sheriff’s deputies found Jason Dunn standing in his driveway while his father, 59-year-old Gregory Dunn, lay on the ground nearby with multiple stab wounds.
Authorities said in a release that they determined through interviews with neighbors that the younger Dunn stabbed his father with a pair of scissors after an argument before severing his hands with a “radial arm type saw.” Both men were hospitalized and listed in critical condition as of Wednesday morning.
“I just can’t imagine something like that happening between family,” a neighbor, Gary Rinehart, told KRCR-TV.
Rinehart told KRCR that while he saw the victim a few times in the 8 years the two have lived in the same neighborhood, his interaction with the suspect was limited.
“When Joe, my neighbor right behind you, called the cops on him for shooting his pellet gun over toward his house, that’s the only time I’ve ever met [the suspect],” Rinehart explained. “The only reason I met him is because he came over and apologized to Joe and said it wouldn’t happen again.”
