Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will be the first member of the high court to preside over a same-sex marriage ceremony on Saturday, when she officiates the vows between Kennedy Center president Michael M. Kaiser, a close friend, and economist John Roberts.

According to the Washington Post, Ginsburg will also officiate another same-sex couple's wedding in September 2013, on the heels of a recent interview in which she expressed excitement at taking on such a role.

"I think it will be one more statement that people who love each other and want to live together should be able to enjoy the blessings and the strife in the marriage relationship," Ginsburg told the Post, adding that she believed she and her colleagues had not been asked to perform same-sex ceremonies in the past out of fear of compromising them before the issue made its way to the high court. She was part of the majority decisions that struck down both the Defense of Marriage Act and California's Proposition 8 in June 2013.

Ginsburg is a longime patron of the Kennedy Center, which Kaiser has led since 2001. Roberts, who is not related to Chief Justice John Roberts, works for the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.
