A 49-year-old Florida man was arrested early Monday morning for allegedly trying to burn down the home he shared with his girlfriend while she was sleeping, WFTV-TV reported.

Authorities charged Troy Ladd with attempted murder and arson after responding to reports that he set his girlfriend Debra Jeffers' SUV on fire before she woke up to find the vehicle ablaze and Ladd pouring gasoline in their living room in New Smyrna Beach, allegedly telling sheriff's deputies, "You might as well go ahead and arrest me."

The incident allegedly began with an argument between Ladd and Jeffers around 10 p.m. Sunday night, when she saw him burning his clothing, television and video game system in the backyard of the residence. The Daytona Beach News-Journal reported that Jeffers allegedly told Ladd, "Why don't you just kill yourself?" before going to bed, waking up around two hours later to see her vehicle burning.

Jeffers allegedly told authorities that Ladd -- on probation at the time of the incident for fleeing the scene of a drunk-driving crash -- was not taking any prescription drugs and had not been diagnosed with any mental illnesses.
