An off-duty bomb squad officer with the Los Angeles Police Department is being praised as a hero after saving a man from a burning vehicle on Wednesday.
Officer Don Thompson was on his way to work when, according to an interview with ABC News, he “saw this car just veer into the retaining wall.”
“It went across all lanes,” he said, “and it was on fire at the time.”
Officer Thompson ran to the car and found the driver trapped and unconscious.
“I said to myself, ‘I have to get him out of there.’ All the while, there was all of this fire. It was just really intense.”
One witness, an actor named Dru Gash, recorded the rescue. “I mean, this guy, he was incredible,” Gash said. “He’s like a superhero. He jumped in there. He opened the car door, reached in there and grabbed this guy out.”
The driver was not identified, but LAPD officials said he suffered minor injuries, and was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence.
