Officials at South Carolina State University confirmed that a 20-year-old student died after being shot inside his dorm room, WLTX-TV reported Friday evening.

The victim was identified as Brandon Robinson, a redshirt junior on the university's football team.

"We are extraordinarily sad about this," university President Thomas Elzey said at a press conference. "He's a very nice young man, and it hurts. It hurts us all."

Authorities are still searching for four suspects connected to the shooting, but have lifted a lockdown order for the campus, located in Orangeburg.

Though police were called to Robinson's dorm around 1:30 p.m. local time, some students told WLTX they did not receive a campus alert about the situation until 3:14 p.m., nearly two hours later.

"As soon as we got the information, and determined that it was an ongoing imminent danger to the university community, we started relaying the information through the appropriate emergency mass communication systems that work well here at the university," campus Police Chief Mernard Clarkson was quoted as saying.
