A river of public revulsion has washed away plans for a celebrity boxing match between George Zimmerman and rapper DMX.
Damon Feldman, promoter of the fight, abruptly announced Saturday via Twitter that he had canceled the fight. “The George Zimmerman fight is canceled I’m sorry for anyone I hurt with this but this was a very big opportunity thank you,” Feldman Tweeted from his account, @hollywoodbox11, which has also subsequently been canceled. A mere three hours earlier, Feldman said he had secured a live-streaming agreement with eccentric British billionaire Alki David, which would have also allowed for the fight to be broadcast live on a British cable channel.
Feldman’s reversal, a mere five days after announcing the high shock value match, comes amid an outcry to refrain from offering Zimmerman additional media attention and an opportunity to earn money. The Facebook page “Cancel This Fight” had grown to 312,000 fans in the days before the cancellation. Roughly 95 percent of respondents to a Philadelphia Magazine poll released Friday said they wanted the match to be canceled.
