Longtime anti-LGBT activist and Catholic League head Bill Donohue has applied to march in New York City’s 2014 LGBT pride parade in June, but intends to carry a banner that reads “Straight is Great.”
Michelangelo Signorille at Huffington Post reported that Donohue made the application in protest of the Guinness beer company’s decision to back out of New York’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The Irish brewer withdrew its support from the annual parade due to parade organizers’ refusal to allow LGBT groups to participate in the Irish heritage event.
According to the Joe.My.God. blog, Heritage Of Pride — the group that organizes the NYC Pride parade — has given Donohue and the Catholic Leauge the go-ahead.
In a letter provided to the blog, Heritage of Pride March Director David Studinski said, “Mr. Donohue and his group are free to participate in the 2014 March. His group’s presence affirms the need for this year’s Pride theme, ‘We Have Won When We’re One.’ Straight is great — as long as there’s no hate.”
Signorille seconded Studinski’s call to include Donohue among the marchers this June.
“I say: bring it on!” wrote Signorille on Thursday. “Let’s let Bill Donohue march in the parade and show that we are better than those troglodytes who run the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in New York, increasingly out of touch with the world.”
If Donohue plans to march, continued Signorille, “(L)et me march under a banner right in front of Donohue’s contingent, saying, ‘Bill Donohue is the Biggest Blowhard on the Face of Planet Earth.'”
“And OK, if that’s not cool, then those of us who are Catholic and gay should simply march alongside Donohue, as part of the ‘league,’ with signs that say ‘Gay, Catholic and Proud.'” he said. “But by all means, let Donohue march!”
Donohue has called for a Catholic boycott of Guinness in the wake of its withdrawal from the St. Patrick’s Day parade in New York.
