Fired Texas trans teacher rehired to avoid lawsuit, but still barred from classroom

A Lumberton, Texas substitute teacher was fired by the Lumberton Independent School District when a parent complained that she is transgender. The Advocate reported that Laura Jane Klug was suspended earlier this month when a parent complained that her trans status was a distraction to students.

Days after the suspension, the school district -- fearing a lawsuit -- reinstated Klug, but not as a teacher. The Advocate said that Klug was offered a full-time position with the district, but under the terms of the hiring, she is not allowed to disclose the nature of the work.

She did confirm to Texas LGBT newspaper Lone Star Q that she is not working as a teacher.

"I was asked not to say where I was working because we don't want the media and we don't want angry parents down there, because it's near one of the schools," said Klug. "I said I'm willing to do whatever because I really need a paycheck. It doesn't make me very happy, but I think it should placate [the parents] somewhat."

Klug is worried, she said, that the publicity around the case has ruined any chances she might have at anonymity and could keep her from finding work in her chosen field as an airplane pilot.

"I'm afraid that all this attention that I've gotten throughout the entire situation might have ruined my chances of ever finding pilot employment," she told Lone Star.

Lone Star Q's staff legal expert said that the Lumberton School District may still be in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, leaving the district open to a lawsuit by Klug.
