A 44-year-old South Carolina man is accused of setting himself and his house on fire while authorities were serving multiple warrants for his arrest, WYFF-TV reported on Monday.
Investigators said Larry Morris was wanted for several counts of criminal sexual conduct. When Spartanburg County Sheriff's deputies and officers with the Cowpens Police Department went into his home in early Monday morning, they saw fire coming from the suspect's bedroom. Morris then allegedly came out of the room in need of medical attention.
"It was just after they had walked in," Police Chief Rick Makeupson told the Spartanburg Herald-Journal. "It was definitely a shock."
None of the deputies involved in the encounter were injured, but Morris was taken to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center for treatment before he is incarcerated.
Because the deputies were in his home at the time of the fire, the suspect was also charged with second-degree arson and five counts of attempted murder. Morris had allegedly only been renting the residence for a few weeks.
