Sleeping 8-year-old Detroit boy shot dead in suspected domestic violence incident

Police in Detroit are saying that an 8-year-old boy who was shot to death while sleeping may have been the unintended victim of domestic violence, WWJ reports.

At approximately 1:15 a.m. on Wednesday, an unidentified person walked up to the townhouse in which Jakari Pearson was sleeping and began shooting. At least three shots were fired through the boy's bedroom wall and window.

The bullets traveled into the upstairs bedroom where Pearson was sleeping, and one of them struck him in the chest. He was rushed to the hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

His mother was also struck by at least one bullet, but her current condition is not known at this time.

According to neighbors, Pearson's mother had been involved in domestic disputes with a man who was not the boy's father.

Sgt. Michael Woody told WWJ that police "have a pretty good idea of who it is that we are looking for. Unfortunately, we can’t talk too much about that just yet as we are in the very early stages of this investigation. We hope the community continues to talk to us and feeds us information so we can track this individual down and get him into custody very quickly."
