‘Game of Thrones’ author George R.R. Martin campaigns for New Mexico Democrat
George Martin, the mind behind HBO’s massively popular television series Game of Thrones, is throwing his weight behind New Mexico incumbent Senator Tom Udall (D) in an effort to help Democrats retain control of the Senate, Winter Is Coming reports.
According to Sen. Udall’s press release, “George R.R. Martin of Game of Thrones is jumping into New Mexico politics to support Senator Tom Udall. George and Tom are teaming up — with George hosting a fundraiser at his personal cinema in Santa Fe on October 7th on behalf of Tom.”
Anyone who donates more than $5 will be eligible to win a trip to meet Martin and Sen. Udall at the fundraiser. However, tickets for the event can be purchased for $250 — and for $2,600, donors can have “Dinner with George.”
Martin’s support of a Democratic candidate isn’t surprising to anyone who reads his website, “Not A Blog,” on which he regularly criticizes conservatives, especially those who affiliate themselves with the Tea Party.
“I was especially glad to see the worst of the far right candidates go down in defeat,” he wrote.
“I just hope the GOP takes the right lesson from these defeats, and moves away from the Tea Party and the far right, to become once more the party of Dwight Eisenhower, Nelson Rockefeller, Everett Dirksen, and Theodore Roosevelt.”
He also regularly hosts fundraisers on behalf of environmental causes like the Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary.
