Des Hague, the puppy-kicking CEO with “emotional response” control issues is expected to be taken out back of the Centerplate Worldwide Overpriced Wieners & Beer Corporation barn and [spoiler alert] put down like Ole Yeller sometime on Tuesday, according to my crappy hometown newspaper that is really awful, but I’ll trust them this one time only. [Update] Now confirmed, he “resigned.”
According to the SD-UT:
Stadiums and other venues that employ Centerplate for food and beverage concessions have been informed that the ouster of the company’s CEO will be announced on Tuesday.
Desmond Hague, CEO of the Connecticut company, was caught on an elevator surveillance camera in Vancouver in late July, kicking and choking a small dog. The video sparked outrage across the nation with the caterer’s customers, including those at San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium.
In a draft news release obtained by U-T Watchdog, Joe O’Donnell, chairman of the board of directors for Centerplate, reiterated that the company did not condone Hague’s misconduct.
“Following an extended review of the incident involving Mr. Hague, I’d like to apologize for the distress that this situation has caused to so many; but also thank our employees, clients and guests who expressed their feelings about this incident,” the draft release says. “Their voices helped us to frame our deliberations during this very unusual and unfortunate set of circumstances.”
Basically fans at stadiums where Centerplate holds the concession rights put pressure on the professional sports teams and stadium authorities responsible for awarding and renewing contracts and said, ‘no justice, no purchase of expensive high-margin fatty snacks and alcoholic beverages,’ and suddenly boy genius CEO became expendable because bye-bye $$$$$ ka-ching, ka-ching.
Of course I’d like to think it was the change.org petition , that rose from 44,000 when I posted a link to it to over 182K worth of signatures through the holiday weekend, but the reality is more likely that Centerplate saw the loss of even one multi-million contract over a puppy abuser not worth the headache of keeping the guy around and continuing to have to clean up after him.
Having said that, ‘thank you Internet people’ for getting the news out, sharing the story, and keeping the pressure on. You deserve a skritch behind the ear and a tummy rub.
Who’s my little Internet flying monkeys filled with a thirst for great vengeance and furious anger? You are! Yes you are, oh yes you are, oh yes you are…
