
The mayor of the Southern California community of Bell Gardens was shot and killed on Tuesday afternoon, KCAL-TV reported.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Daniel Crespo was shot during a domestic disturbance at his residence.
Bell Gardens is located about 10 minutes away from downtown Los Angeles. Crespo, a New York native, was part of city government since 2001, when he was first elected to the local city council.
UPDATE, 8:31 p.m. EST: The Times reported that Crespo allegedly died after being shot by his wife during an argument with her that also involved the couple's 19-year-old son.
According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Crespo and the son got into a fight after the younger man intervened in the altercation. Crespo's wife then allegedly grabbed a gun and shot the mayor. She has been taken into custody.
Crespo reportedly died after being taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Update, 10:01 p.m.: KTLA-TV reported that Crespo died after being shot several times in the chest by his wife, who was identified as 43-year-old Levette Crespo.
