A 54-year-old Massachusetts woman allegedly vandalized a church with “the mark of the beast” and then attacked police officers with a large crucifix on Tuesday.
Amarellis Cermeno was arrested by Haverhill police after someone called to report that a woman wheeling a suitcase with an American flag had written “666” in black marker on the La Iglesia Biblica Bautista church, according to local news outlet WCVB5.
Officers discovered the “666” vandalism in 15 places on the church’s exterior, and found Cermeno in the area.
She allegedly tried to strike Detective Sgt. Dana Burrill multiple times with a large metal crucifix. But police said they were able arrest Cermeno without incident.
The crucifix was taken from a nativity scene at the Sacred Hearts Church. The cross was donated to the church after vandals stole the baby Jesus from the nativity scene on Christmas day and left a severed pig’s head in its place.
“The investigation of the baby Jesus theft at Sacred Hearts Church remains open at this time,” police said.
Cermeno was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, malicious destruction of property over $250, disorderly conduct, destruction of a place of worship and resisting arrest.
