Former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo has passed away at the age of 82.
The New York Daily News reported Thursday evening that the former Democratic governor died only hours after his eldest son, Gov. Andrew Cuomo was sworn in to a second term as New York’s highest elected official.
The senior Cuomo was too ill with a cardiac ailment to attend the ceremony on Thursday, which took place in New York City.
“He couldn’t be here physically today,” Gov. Cuomo said during his inaugural address, “but my father is in this room…He’s in the heart and mind of every person who is here. His inspiration and his legacy and his spirit is what has brought this day to this point.”
Gov. Cuomo served three terms and became known nationally as a gifted orator and persuasive speaker.
According to the Daily News, “In addition to his wife and his son the governor, Mario Cuomo is survived by four other children, including Chris Cuomo, an anchor on CNN.”
