John Oliver tells Letterman: I’d be deported if I wasn’t ‘brainwashed’ into watching the Super Bowl
Last Week Tonight host John Oliver joked to David Letterman on Thursday that his immigration status hinged on whether he watches the Super Bowl.
“‘Brainwashed’ is not the right word,” the Late Show host said in a clip from Oliver’s upcoming appearance on the show. “But have you been persuaded to the Super Bowl way of life here in the United States?”
“Oh, ‘brainwashed’ is the right word, ’cause I’m on a ‘green card,'” Oliver replied. “I think if I don’t watch the Super Bowl, I get ejected. I think they cut me with a zip line.”
“Yeah, you’re gone,” Letterman told him.
Oliver, a native of England, also said it was “intimidating” for other countries to see the NFL’s title game aired around the world.
“When you beam that around the world, everyone else is thinking, ‘If they’re capable of this, what else could they do?'” the former Daily Show correspondent said.
While he was used to seeing large sporting events in other countries, Oliver called the scope of the Super Bowl “peak America.”
“It’s when America Americanized itself to the full American extent,” he told Letterman, adding, “I’m not used to seeing fighter jets fly over the stadium at the start and then having half an hour of Katy Perry throwing glitter hand grenades, or whatever she’s doing.”
The full interview will be aired Thursday night, but the Late Show posted the exchange on YouTube, as seen below.
