Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) on Wednesday lashed out at Raw Story over a report that he was upset with women in Congress — whom he referred to as “our Republican females” — because they had derailed a 20-week abortion ban by insisting on rape exceptions.
In a story titled, “Gohmert: ‘Our Republican females sent entirely wrong message’ by wanting rape exception to abortion ban,” Raw Story reported on the Texas congressman’s conference call with E.W. Jackson on Tuesday.
“Most of the conference was 100 percent in favor of the bill that was going to be brought to the floor,” Gohmert explains in audio published by Raw Story. “Some of us were wishing that there would not be any exceptions because it was going to be 20 weeks — no abortions after 20 weeks — when the evidence is clear those babies feel.”
“But there was an exception put on there that unless there was a case of reported rape — reported to authorities,” he continues. “Well, that became the dividing factor among some of our female members of the House, Republican female members. But some were adamant they didn’t want any exceptions, some were saying, no, we [should] not require it be reported to authorities.”
“I’m told that they’re still going to bring it back, but because there was such division among our Republican females, they pulled the bill that day,” Gohmert says. “And that was extremely unfortunate, and it sent the entirely wrong message.”
Gohmert turned to a friendly outlet — Breitbart.com — which obligingly said that Raw Story had “twisted his words about the abortion bill that recently failed in Congress to make it sound like he said the complete opposite of what he actually said.”
“Gohmert explained that he was not attacking the female Republican members of Congress, but instead was criticizing the way House leadership had handled the bill and not allowed sufficient time nor opportunity for these women to have had input into the bill’s language,” the Breitbart report insisted.
Gohmert told Breitbart that he was frustrated with Raw Story because the reporter was a “left-wing troll” who just wanted “to take anything a Christian says and twist it.”
“I have nothing but respect for the females in our conference,” Gohmert reportedly said. “My issue is with leadership, not the other Members.”
And Gohmert also continued to refer to the GOP congresswomen as “females” during his interview with Breitbart, suggesting that he did not understand why many found his initial remarks to be offensive.
Here’s the audio clip, which Breitbart did not include with its report.
