A 52-year-old South Carolina man was severely beaten before being arrested and charged with sexual assault against his nephew’s girlfriend, the Myrtle Beach Sun reported.
The Conway Police Department posted William L. Mattson’s bloody mug shot on its Facebook page, saying his injuries were caused “by someone acting in defense for the victim.”
According to a police report, Mattson’s nephew, who has not been identified, claimed responsibility for the attack early Thursday morning. The nephew said he took the woman to his home following a party on Dec. 31, then left. He allegedly heard “moaning” coming from inside his room when he returned to the home.
The nephew then told investigators that he kicked the door in and found his uncle on top of his girlfriend.,He then attacked Mattson, driving him out of the house. Mattson allegedly lives in the house along with the couple and his nephew’s father.
The suspect told authorities that he began to “hug and kiss” with the woman after drinking with her. At the time, Mattson said, she was naked under a blanket while he was fully clothed.
However, the woman told police that the encounter was not consensual. Mattson is charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct.
