Police released an audio recording of the events that led to the shooting death of a Texas college student by a campus police officer.

A grand jury declined to indict former officer Christopher Carter, who fatally shot 23-year-old Cameron Redus during a confrontation in December 2013 near the campus of the University of the Incarnate Word.

The officer shot Redus five times at close range, including the likely fatal shot into his back.

District Attorney Nico LaHood said he brought five witnesses before the Bexar County grand jury, but he declined to say whether he recommended an indictment or simply presented evidence for the panel to make up their own minds.

The student’s family has been frustrated by the university’s refusal to release audio recorded during the confrontation, which began with a traffic stop outside Redus’ off-campus apartment building.

Carter claims that Redus was uncooperative and grabbed his baton during the encounter, and the audio recording shows the student was verbally combative with the officer.

However, the audio recording – which was released Thursday in response to an open records request by KENS-TV -- does not clearly show whether Redus physically attacked Carter.

Video of the incident shows only the back seat of Carter’s patrol truck, but investigators have said a front-facing camera was not operational at the time.

Carter starts the encounter by telling Redus to stand still and place his hands on the hood of his car, then to place them behind his back.

“You’re freaking me out, man,” Redus can be heard saying. “I feel like I’m going to get raped right now. Dude, you’re scaring me.”

The officer tells Redus he’s under arrest as the student continues asking whether Carter is going to rape him.

“I’m not trying to get down with that right now,” Redus says.

The officer tells Redus to stop moving or resisting at least 60 times on the recording, and he warns the student that he will shoot him if he does not comply with police orders.

Redus taunts the officer by calling him “pathetic” and “stupid,” and he mocks Carter’s threats.

“You’re going to f*cking shoot me?” Redus says. “You’re going to shoot me if I don’t stop? You’re pathetic. Is that what cops do?”

The audio captures the sound of an apparent physical struggle as the officer continues telling the student to stop.

Then the sound of gunshots can be heard.
