GOP senator seeks to protect America from fancy, European-style dollar coins
Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) filed a budget amendment intended to keep American dollars printed as paper currency – instead of minting fancy, European-style coins.
The Louisiana Republican objected to a proposal by Senate Budget Committee Chairman Mike Enzi (R-WY), who wants to facilitate the move toward dollar coins as a potential budget-cutting measure.
Vitter filed an amendment to Enzi’s proposal that would “strike out a provision that makes it easier for Washington elites to force Americans to give up their dollar bills and use dollar coins, like Europeans.”
The amendment was among more than 700 filed by senators to the proposed budget.
