In a campaign likely to infuriate anti-vaccination advocates, Surgeon General Vivek Murthy paid a visit to Sesame Street to allay Elmo's own concerns over keeping a proper vaccine schedule, in a video produced by the Daily Dot.
"I was worried about getting a shot," the young monster admits to Murthy. "Why does everyone need a vaccination, anyway?"
"Let me ask you this: do you carry an umbrella when it rains?" Murthy responded.
"Of course -- Elmo likes to stay dry," the monster confirmed.
"Do you wear a helmet when you ride a tricycle?" Murthy asked.
"Of course -- Elmo wants to stay safe," he replied.
Just like an umbrella and a helmet act as protection, Murthy explained, vaccines protect people from germs. And despite being afraid at first that the shot would hurt, Elmo found that singing a little song helped him get through it.
"Why doesn't everybody get a vaccination?" Elmo asked once the process was over.
"That's a good question, Elmo," Murthy said. "That's a good question."
The video was released alongside a separate 30-second clip as part of a collaboration with Sesame Street and the Department of Health and Human Services.
"Tell all your friends on Sesame Street to get vaccinated, too," Murthy tells Elmo.
