A hammer-wielding man who hit three people on the head in tourist-packed areas of New York City earlier this week has been shot in a confrontation with police, New York media reported on Wednesday.
New York Police Department spokeswoman Kelly Ort said a suspect carrying a hammer was shot on Wednesday in a confrontation with police in Manhattan at about 10 a.m. and was taken to Bellevue Hospital Center.
Ort could not confirm whether it was the same man police had been pursuing after the three attacks on Monday.
Local broadcaster NY1 cited police in reporting that two police officers approached a man because he matched the description of the hammer attacker. The report said the suspect took out a hammer and chased one of the officers, striking the officer multiple times.
The other officer then fired at least one shot at the man, the broadcaster said.
Ort did not know the extent of injuries sustained by the officer or the suspect.
In one of the three attacks on Monday, a man took a hammer out of a bag and struck a 28-year-old Manhattan woman as she walked toward an exit in Union Square Park, police said.
About 10 minutes later, also in Lower Manhattan, a 33-year-old woman who was walking with her boyfriend was approached from behind and hit in the back of the head, authorities said. The suspect fled.
While investigating those assaults, police learned of a third attack that took place earlier in the day in Midtown Manhattan. The victim in that incident, a 20-year-old man, had been crossing a street when he was hit in the head with a hammer, police said.
All three victims suffered scalp injuries, including cuts to the head, and were treated at an area hospital.
