Police in Hoover, Alabama said a 31-year-old man was likely shot and killed by his two-year-old son, WBRC-TV reported.
The victim, identified as Divine Vaniah Chambliss, was found dead inside an apartment by a relative on Tuesday afternoon with a gunshot to his head. The apartment belonged to the child’s mother, and Chambliss — the child’s father — would reportedly stay at home during the day to watch the boy while the woman went to work.
According to the Associated Press, a semi-automatic pistol was found inside the room.
Police Captain Greg Rictor said that, while the investigation into the incident had not been completed, his department had all but ruled out suicide as the cause of the victim’s death. He called the incident a “horrible accident.”
“It wouldn’t be a physical obstacle for a 2 1/2-year-old boy to pull a trigger on a semi-automatic handgun,” Rictor said.
