A Denver woman has a accused a restaurant she frequents of being racist after getting a receipt for her dinner with "You f*** Mexicans" printed on it, reports Fox 31 Denver.
Beatriz Castorena claims she goes to El Valle Mexican Restaurant about twice a month, but was shocked to see the message on her receipt.
“I’m looking over it. And I’m like, ‘Oh, wait a minute. Look what it says on here,’” Castorena said she told her husband before showing him the paper with the offensive phrase on it.
What set her off was when the waitress dismissed it, saying, "Oh. Ha! How funny."
"Funny? That’s not funny. That’s not funny at all,” Castorena says she told the waitress.
Although the restaurant explained to her that message was from her waitress to the cook -- both of whom are Mexican ---and refunded her money, Castorena still let her niece post an image of the receipt online causing the restaurant to receive multiple calls accusing them of racism.
“A lot of people got offended definitely,” says the restaurant owners’ son, Oscar Rivera who added, “No way was it intended for them or to them or no way reflects what we believe because obviously we are all Mexican or we are Mexico born.”
Cook, Chu Rodriguez, agreed, saying: "That message was directed at me because that’s how we act among each other. That’s how we are as Mexicans.”
Castorena was still not mollified, saying she was unhappy the waitress didn't apologize.
“She’s Mexican. I’m Mexican. She shouldn’t have wrote that. She could have apologized. She (the owner) said it was meant for the cook. I don’t care. It was on my check,” she said.
The owners say they have instructed the staff to "Stop joking around about like that," and noted that the waitress quit saying she was embarrassed by the whole ordeal.
