Authorities in Fresno, California are searching for the suspect who allegedly shot an 18-year-old pregnant woman in the eye in a road rage attack, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The shooting ocurred around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday while the victim, who is three months pregnant, and her husband were driving on a two-lane road. Her husband, who was driving, passed a vehicle described as a light brown SUV because it was driving slowly.

According to the Fresno County Sheriffs Office, the SUV caught up to the couple's vehicle without provocation and pulled up alongside them on their left. The suspected gunman hit the woman while shooting from the SUV's passenger side, before fleeing the scene.

"It's unclear why someone in the suspect's vehicle resorted to an act of violence," the department said in a statement.

The victim's husband pulled off the road, at which point a passerby called 911 for help. The Washington Post reported that the couple received a police escort to a local hospital.

She was then airlifted to another facility and was listed in critical condition as of Monday evening. It is unclear whether her pregnancy was affected by the attack. Both the suspected gunman and the driver of the SUV remain at large.
