James Cameron Ponder

A state police trooper was shot and killed late Sunday in western Kentucky, authorities said on Monday.

State Trooper James Cameron Ponder was shot in Lyon County near Interstate 24, a section of which was shut down as police searched for the suspect, reported WKYT-TV.

The suspect was identified as 25-year-old Joseph Johnson-Shanks, of Missouri.

"We have a very dangerous situation at this time," Lyon County Judge Executive Wade White said on Facebook.

White said the shooter was "armed and dangerous" and traveling on foot, possibly with at least one passenger.
