A vandal draped raw bacon over the door handles at a Las Vegas mosque in an incident police are investigating a possible hate crime.
Surveillance video showed the vandal, a white man with a goatee and glasses, wrapping pork — which is considered unclean by Muslims — on the door handles at 3:17 a.m. Sunday, reported KSNV-TV.
Video shows him first tossing bacon at the back door to the Masjid-e-Tawheed mosque and then go to the front of the building, where he carefully draped and wrapped the bacon around handles at the main entrance.
The vandal paused for a moment and crams a few strips of raw bacon into his mouth to hold as he struggles to open the greasy package.
The motion-activated video then shows a member of the mosque arrive about two and a half hours later, remove his shoes and discover the damage.
A founding member of the mosque said he feared the man could have been armed, and he worried what might have happened if a worshiper had interrupted his vandalism.
However, member Ismaeel Almughrabe extended an invitation to the vandal to come to the mosque and meet its members — who he said would be happy to welcome the man to talk about their religion.
“I hope that in his conscience in his heart he feels ashamed of what he did,” Almughrabe said.
