‘Popping balloons’ blamed for false active shooter report at Arkansas college
A community college in Arkansas said “popping balloons” lead the campus to be locked down briefly on Friday afternoon.
Black River Technical College in Pocahontas gave the “all clear” shortly after a report of an active shooter. That report ended up being erroneous.
“The cause of the active shooter alert was the sound of popping balloons which were mistaken as gunshots,” the college said on its Facebook page. “Dispatch was called in response. BRTC is very thankful for the immediate response of local authorities and the help of the Independence SWAT team who were on campus for a routine simulated training across campus.”
