CNN’s Michael Smerconish almost lost it on-air Saturday morning when his guest — who heads up the conservative Catholic League — defended Donald Trump’s swearing on the stump by bellowing, “We can’t act like little virgins!”
The blustery billionaire has come under attack from social conservatives for occasional cursing during his unscripted stump speeches, with rivals Ted Cruz and and Marco Rubio calling him out for “vulgarities” and his use of profanity.
Saturday morning, Catholic League head Bill Donohoe rushed to Trump’s defense, blaming television and movies for a culture that leads to swearing.
“What we have been doing out of Hollywood, what’s going on in radio and television and movies — the fact that we’re so crude in the way we hit people and then all of a sudden when a politician says something this and we get upset about it?” the Catholic defender ranted as Smerconish looked on and smirked. “The vulgarity culture is sexual, it’s disgusting, and Trump contributes to it and, to that extent, I’m against him. But all of a sudden, we can’t act like little virgins, OK? We’ve been allowing this kind of language to go on for a long time and if I speak up about it, I’m a prude. Now all of a sudden it’s cool to say this is wrong.”
