In a bizarre twist of television Wednesday night, late-night host Jimmy Kimmel talked about the New Hampshire Primary winners Senator Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump but had some pretty epic inequality in the way that he spoke about Trump vs. the democrats in the race.
When talking about Sanders’ victory on Tuesday night, Kimmel said that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was a gracious loser before “strangling a staffer that got a little too close to her,” and cut to a clip of Statler and Waldorf, the two old guys on the Muppets. Waldorf, the white-haired round-headed Muppet, is talking to the audio track of Sanders’ speech about how the government belongs to all of the people. At the close of the speech Animal the Muppet is shown playing the drums and chanting “feel the Bern! Feel the Bern!”
By contrast, Kimmel highlighted Donald Trump’s graciousness in his speech where he complimented people saying “this is something very special.” Trump also talked about what a great job his staff did, how talented they are and how special they are to him. “So good and so fast and so strong,” as well as supporters who are “so big, so strong, so powerful.” Then a random selection of words like “finest,” “great,” “fantastic,” “beautiful,” “really great,” “fantastic” again, “they’re terrific,” “strong, incredible,” “fantastic” a third time and finally “so beautiful.” Then a rainbow graphic appears over Trump.
In an interview in December, Trump actually commented that Kimmel has been one of the few late-night show hosts that Trump believes has given him a fair shake. “He’s been terrific. He’s stuck up for me, how long ago was that with Barbara Walters.” Kimmel admitted that he got into trouble for what he said, and Trump said that he knew about it, “that’s why I like you. You went against the establishment.”
