A militant who hunkered down during the occupation of a wildlife refuge in Oregon early this year will be allowed to await trial at home after he expressed embarrassment over videos of his anti-government rants, the Oregonian reports.
Sean Anderson, 47, was in custody awaiting trial related to conspiracy charges stemming from the occupation. He was released on condition that the local sheriff monitor him and report any violations, that he find a job in his hometown of Riggins, Idaho and that he has no contact with any “patriot” movement member.
“I was very embarrassed,” Anderson said of videos of himself filmed during the occupation. “I am very ashamed of it.”
Anderson was one of the last holdouts at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in an armed 41-day stand-off between Bundy-led militants and law enforcement.
Prosecutors shared the videos with the court, which showed a rifle-toting Anderson urging fellow militants to “fight for your country” and anticipating a “bloodbath,” according to the Oregonian. It shows Anderson and another occupier digging trenches as a defense against what they thought would be an FBI raid.
In yet another video, Anderson referred to law enforcement as the enemy and said, “If they stop you from getting here, kill them.” He admitted to firing his weapon in another video. An FBI surveillance plane was in the sky at the time.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Barrow had urged Anderson be kept in custody pending trial because his anti-government views render him a danger to the public. But in court on Wednesday, Anderson told the judge he renounced those views. Further, Idaho County Sheriff Doug Giddings had written a letter in support of Anderson and his release.
Anderson and his wife, Sandy, were two of the last four occupiers to surrender in February.
In the videos, Anderson seems unhinged.
“The media has been ordered to leave, and that means they are coming to kill us and they don’t want them to see that!” he yelled into the camera. “They’re going to murder all of us and the media are cowards.”
“The media has been waiting for a bloodbath this whole time we’ve been here!” he continued. “Now, there’s going to be one and they’re told to run? Because the feds don’t want them to know who is murdering us!”
He seemed to urge violence, inviting militants to join them and kill law enforcement that blocks them from doing so.
“Get here, get some. This is history in the making,” he urged. “There are no laws in this United States now!” the man insisted. “This is a free-for-all Armageddon. Any LEO or military or law enforcement or feds that stand up and f*ck their oath — don’t abide by their oath — are the enemy! If they stop you from getting here, kill them!”
