Texas woman knew husband abused special-needs daughter for years before her death: police
A 38-year-old Texas woman allegedly knew about the years of sexual abuse her daughters suffered at the hands of her husband before her oldest child was found dead with her uterus cut out, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
Debi Bryant Holland was arrested and charged with aggravated sexual assault of an elderly or disabled person following the death of 18-year-old Holli Jeffcoat. The girl, who police said had the mental age of a 6- or 7-year-old, told a school counselor in February that James Holland, her stepfather, had impregnated her.
“She couldn’t even give consent at 45,” said Lubbock County Sheriff’s Lt. Bryan Taylor.
Jeffcoat reportedly told the counselor that “she didn’t want to go home with dad because she didn’t want to have sex. The sex hurt.” She also allegedly said that because her mother did not want her to finish the pregnancy, “James was going to take the baby out with a coat hanger.”
Authorities believe that the male suspect had abused Jeffcoat since she was 12 years old and that Debi Holland was aware of the attacks but asked the victim not to mention it because she needed him “to pay bills.” James Holland also reportedly abused Jeffcoat’s 15-year-old sister.
KCBD-TV reported that Jeffcoat was diagnosed with “penetrating injuries” and a sexually-transmitted disease as far back as 2008, but no charges were brought against James Holland at the time.
James Holland is currently charged with continued aggravated sexual assault of a child in connection with a separate case. His wife is being held on a $500,000 bond and could face additional charges.
“This investigation is not over by any stretch of the imagination,” Taylor said.
