Republican Party officials in Riverside County, California are investigating a picture posted on an official account suggesting that Hillary Clinton should be led to the gallows.
According to the Riverside Press-Enterprise, the picture was posted twice on the Riverside County GOP Twitter account on Wednesday as a response to a question over where to get a "Republicans for Hillary" sign.
The image depicts a hangman holding one noose and standing in front of two others, with the caption, "I'm ready for Hillary," a takeoff on the Democratic presidential nominee's campaign slogan.
The second time, the picture was posted with a note stating, "Sorry they never arrived but this is pretty popular."
The Press-Enterprise reprinted the picture, which can be seen below.
The county's party chair, Scott Mann, seemed to contradict himself regarding the picture throughout the day. The Press-Enterprise reported that Mann initially downplayed it as "nothing more than political satire" showing how the former secretary of state has "gotten away with every scandal and political flip-flop in her public life."
In a separate statement later, however, Mann apologized for the use of the picture and suggested that an unidentified volunteer with access to the party Twitter account "will be held accountable."
"I was horrified and had the Tweet taken down immediately," Mann's second statement read. "While some may think it was political satire, it clearly has no place in American political dialogue."
