Miami Marlins cancel game after star pitcher Jose Fernandez dies in early morning boating accident
Star Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez was tragically killed in a boating accident early Sunday morning, reports CBS Miami.
According to authorities, two other victims besides Fernandez were found dead and searchers are looking for more people.
In a statement, the Marlins have called off Sunday’s game with the Atlanta Braves, saying: “The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of Jose Fernandez. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time. Today’s game against the Atlanta Braves has been cancelled.”
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue stated they received a call about a possible boating accident at around 3 a.m., and upon arrival at the scene discovered the boat upside down and crashed into rocks.
The Cuban-born Fernandez, who the National League Rookie of the Year in 2013, was 24.
The other two victims have not been identified.
