Saturday night, a 15-year-old boy with Down syndrome walked into a men's restroom and was subsequently attacked.
According to KRON, the boy's mother waited nearby as her son was attacked and sexually assaulted in the men's room. When she learned what happened, she immediately reported it to the station officials and her son was taken to a local hospital.
While the suspect has not yet been identified, police have a man in custody and are booking him into the Martinez Detention on charges of lewd acts on a child/dependent person.
Conservatives argue that bathrooms need to stay segregated and transgender people must use the bathroom associated with their birth gender because of a safety concern. But the evidence has not been in their favor.
Sexual assault and domestic violence groups maintain that municipalities that have non-discrimination policies on the books have not seen an increase in sexual assaults or violence in bathrooms.
