While both sides of the political spectrum throw out insults using "Hitler" as a pejorative, one Kansas Republican is actually embracing the former war criminal and Nazi leader responsible for the murders of over 11 million people, 6 million of which were Jews.
According to the Wichita Eagle, Speaker Pro Tem Peggy Mast posted a comment indicating she was sharing a video, but didn't include the link. All that appeared on her Facebook page was a status update reading, “Great quote from Hitler in the video. Please, listen to it closely. His words are profound! Let’s start using discernment.”
Kansas House Speaker Ray Merrick’s chief of staff, Christie Krieghauser, was concerned.
“Sorry, I’m confused,” she wrote in response. “What video and how is there a great quote from Hitler?”
When the Eagle reached out to her, she said that she remained confused because she couldn't believe Mast would consider anything Hitler said to be profound.
An hour after the initial post went up, Mast shared an article from an anti-choice Christian blog that included a transcript and video of anti-abortion activist Gianna Jessen testifying in a Congressional hearing on Planned Parenthood. In that video, Jessen quotes Hitler and equates the women's clinics to the Holocaust at the hands of the Nazi leader.
“The receptivity of the masses is very limited, their intelligence is small, but their power of forgetting is enormous. In consequence of these facts, all effective propaganda must be limited to a very few points and must harp on these in slogans until the last member of the public understands what you want him to understand by your slogan,” Hitler said and Jessen quoted to Congress.
Mast is not running for re-election for her seat.
