Stephen Colbert had a lot to say to wrap up this week’s news on Friday’s “Late Show.”
Colbert noted that there have been multiple cases of vandalism or graffiti celebrating Trump with either Klan messages or Nazi symbols and sayings. He showed one brick wall that was spray-painted saying, “Heil Trump.”
“I cannot believe this,” Colbert said. “It’s 2016! Can we please wait a little longer before putting up the 2020 campaign signs.”
One of the largest stories this week was about fake news sites that gained considerable traffic during the election. While social media sites like Facebook attempted to absolve themselves from blame for allowing such news to trend, they ultimately began taking steps to fix the problem.
One man who heads up fake news websites was interviewed bragging about how easy it is to fool Republicans with fake stories. In response, Colbert generated fake news headlines about the fake news creator.
This week, a neo-Nazi blogger decided that New Balance sneakers were the “official shoe of white people.” Colbert noted that the “fascist-nista” wrote that the idea was brilliant because they could recognize each other by their shoes or sportswear.
“Finally, a way for nazis to recognize each other, because the swastika neck tattoo was a little subtle,” he joked.
Americans angry about the story responded by burning their shoes in disgust.
“It’s the most moving act of shoe-related civil disobedience since Dr. Martin Luther Scholls’ ‘Letter from a Birmingham Foot Locker'” Colbert mocked. “He made up it to the mountaintop very fast. He ran up the thing. He was gelling.”
It was also announced this week that the A&E show “Duck Dynasty” would not return for another season.
“Turns out the guys wanted to spend more time exploring their true passion: Challenging squirrels to staring contests,” Colbert joked. “No word yet on what the guys plan to do next, but my money’s on Phil Robertson being chosen as the next Supreme Court Justice.”
